Beach Retreat – August 2013

The Ground Rules of Story: Fit Your Memoir into Classic Story Form

freestock+Beach+Retreat School

It’s pretty hard to know where you are going without a map. Knock years of time and frustration off your own writing process by learning how to introduce your intuitive and instinctual writing self to the structural format of story telling. Novels and movies use a basic formula to tell a great story and once you discover this for structure for yourself, your writing life will change. We’ll map out the four-part story structure, study two films as well as one memoir in order to deepen your understanding through experience. Writers will also be asked to bring a 20 pg. layout of their entire book idea, prior to arriving, which will be shared and discussed as part of series of workshopping/brainstorming sessions.

This four day workshop is an annual event on the Oregon Coast and is open to a dozen writers. There will be two days of intensive teaching, from 10-4 with a break for lunch and two days of broken teaching, in the AM and the PM, leaving you time for writing/revision and for resting your mind as you stroll the wide, long beach of Manzanita or hike the narrow, steep trails up Neakahnie Mountain.

DATES: August 16, 17, 18, 19
TIMES: Aug. 16 & 18, 10-1 & 5-7:30/Aug. 17 & 19 10-4 p.m.
(Snacks, tea, coffee provided)
COST: $475.00 *

Storytelling From the Bones Up
Cut years off of the book-writing process

Freestock+Structure School

Do you have a clear concept? What are your themes? What’s an antagonistic force and why do you need one? When and how do you build a character, and how much should you build each one?

In this class, New York Times Bestselling author Jennifer Lauck helps you identify the components of solid storytelling so you can use them to

• Create believable heroes and characters
• Have your hero define the quest that makes up your entire story
• Create obstacles that block your hero’s way
• Have your hero deliver a satisfying finish to the quest

Jennifer will also teach you how to save years of time, effort, and frustration and get the most out of your creativity. We’ll workshop your writing in class to identify and harness the components of your fiction or creative nonfiction project. Then you can move to a completed—and maybe even publishable—manuscript well ahead of schedule.

Hawthorne Fellows: A Publishing Program

A five-month program for writers to focus on establishing your writing goals and publishing regularly. It’s part seminar, part editorial team, and part literary assembly line.

Fellows meet twice a month for five months — and share work through e-mail with other fellows regularly — as a means to refine individual pieces. Some meetings are specifically designed to include literary professionals — agents, publicists, and editors. The goal of the Fellows Editorial Meeting is to help writers make final decisions to prepare their work for publication.

The Boulevard is the magazine for the Hawthorne Fellows who assist in editing each others work for publication.

Acceptance into the program is a major confirmation of your ambition and focus as a working writer. In considering you for acceptance into the Hawthorne Fellows program, we consider the needs of writers for time and attention beyond the short traditional workshop. Hawthorne Fellows are committed to sharing their knowledge and writing and are focused on helping each other make the best decisions before readying pieces for publication.

This is an advanced class, as good as taking a teaching with me in person, and it covers detailed explanation of the necessary tools you need to be a fine storyteller. 1) Structure. 2) Scene. 3) Characterization. Over three classes, seven listening & learning hours, you will learn from great books on writing and from published examples from great writing. Students love this class.

“I want to thank you for an amazing class. I took copious notes and could barely settle my brain down to fall asleep. I woke up 5:30 this morning with memories of my early childhood. I jumped out of bed (I usually hit snooze at least three times) and started to write. You have inspired me. Yet again. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.” ~ Beth

“I went outside after class with you, sat in the sunshine and thought about how thankful I am for you and your teaching. I always feel like I can move mountains after your class. I am starting to understand a little more each time. You are so inspiring.” ~ Anglea
