This is a great book to teach you how to “get right to it.” She tells you up front what’s going to happen and prepares you again and again for the inevitably of what is happening and yet she also keeps you turning the pages.

Without a Map

Meredith Hall is a stunning writer who was awarded the $50,000 Room of One’s Own Grant. Her story had me up until three in the morning, staring at the wall as I explored the deep questions she posed about mothering, motherhood and the limits of love. This book isn’t for everyone but I have to say it is an extraordinary example of memoir writing at the highest level.

Liar’s Club

This is a classic memoir, a MUST read. Her technique is gorgeous. Study the way she organizes her book too.

Another Bullshit Night in Suck City

This is a great, experimental book. Nick Flynn messes with form and breaks a lot of rules. I love this book for the courageous way the author messes with convention.
